Part 2: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves

In Part 2 of “That’s Not in Here,” we confront the popular saying, “God helps those who help themselves.” It may sound wise, but it doesn’t reflect the message of Scripture or the gospel.

This message exposes four lies hidden inside self-reliance: that we have to get ourselves together before coming to Jesus, that we can change ourselves if we try hard enough, that needing help is weakness, and that Jesus eventually grows tired of helping us.

The truth is much better: God helps those who recognize their absolute need for Him. We are saved by grace, transformed by Jesus, strengthened in our weakness, and sustained by abiding in Christ. The Christian life was never meant to be lived independently—it is a life of continual dependence on Jesus.
